Beautiful (see

OK,
guilty - I loved every cheesy minute of this predicatble romantic
comedy.
Wait,
maybe NOT so predictable. I mean, who would have thought Hugh
Grant could sing as well as he does here?
This
is awelcome return to form for Grant (reputedly a cranky type
in real life) after the dire American Idol spoof American
Dreamz, thanks to a much smarter script, honest performances
and great chemistry with co-star Drew Barrymore. This gal
doesn't get enough credit for her talent.
Grant
plays Alex Fletcher, once a big name with the 80s band PoP!
(think Wham!), notably in thier biggest hit Pop! Goes My Heart.
With his sneaky former partner having gone on to fame and
fortune, Alex is now a solo-has been plying the nostalgia
circuit.
Suddenly,
there's a chance to revive his career when the latest pop
sensation Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), who found Pop!s music
helpful during her parent's divorce as a child) asks him to
write a track for her upcoming CD. There's just one problem
- while Alex is great with a tune, he's crap with lyrics.
Which is where Sophie Fisher (Barrymore) comes in. She's the
accident-prone young lady watering the plants in his apartment
and idly singing to herself lyrics Alex finds interesting.
Without
giving too much away, musical and romantic lightning strikes,
complications set in that might or might not be resolved and
a very pleasant 96 minutes passes by.
Worthy
of special mention is Brad Garrett, who does a very nice job
as Chris Riley, Alex's long-suffering manager.
A
making-of featurette, a Pop! video and some deleted scenes
are among the extras.
